Overview
Shield or tank crusaders can be the cheapest class to build. Building vendor gear, and upgrading it to +20 will allow you to tackle any normal content (AKA, not custom stuff) in the game, with a few minor hiccups. Maybe a random exploding mimic will get you every once in a while, but that's few and far between.
The main role of a shield crusader is to tank.
You'll want provoke, and all your shield skills. Especially shield boomerang and smite. Those two skills are crucial for positioning mobs, while provoke will keep instance mobs on you, rather than your impatient team mates.
You can easily get a crusader going, as there isn't really anything confusing about the playstyle or it's kit. You slap on all your buffs, and you Leeroy Jenkins directly into enemy lines.
The cool thing about the rebalanced Faith skill, is that it increases your received healing by a significant amount, and just by building INT to spam your skills, you're able to get some really powerful heals off to sustain yourself, and in some kind of awful situation, maybe even save a party member with it.
Make sure you don't forget about heal!
Gear
It's recommended to use gear that boosts DEF, MDEF, MaxHP% or some kind of resistance to what ever it is you're fighting. Something like melee or magic resist are good for general use. Racial, size and elemental resistances are good when you are preparing for a specific fight or map.
The main appeal of a DEF/MDEF focused build, is that you can stack VERY high defenses to increase your damage output. Keep in mind that a tank build isn't going to be deal a whole lot of damage compared to DPS builds, but you can consider this as the sort of bruiser build.
This build doesn't use entirely DEF/MDEF focused gear, mostly because you can get more mileage out of level 200 gear. However, if you don't need cards, you can grab the vendor gear that matches your level, get it to +20, and use that. The major upside to crusader is that it's one of the absolute cheapest jobs to get good gear on.
That being said MAKE SURE TO REFINE EVERYTHING AS HIGH AS YOU CAN MANAGE!!
